Last of the Juanitas was an American three-piece math-rock-meets-alternative metal instrumental band formed in 1998 in Tucson, AZ, that moved to San Diego, CA, and finished in Portland, OR. Members were David Sullivan (guitars), John Schier (drums), Lana Rebel (subsequently recording as Miss Lana Rebel), and Maurice Bryan Giles (guitars, vocals).
The band supposedly got its name from a bottle of hot sauce. The music was heavy, sludgy, jarring, and melodic all at the same time; comparable to the Melvins colliding with Drive Like Jehu (former Jehu guitarist, Rick Froberg, actually appeared on their debut album). They released two full-length albums on Flapping Jet Records, in addition to several 7" singles.
John Schier, the drummer, also played with Portland band the Cosmos Group. Schier is the most recent drummer to admit to being in Trumans Water. He was also a sidelight fixture in the early 90s pre-post sub-underground Green House scene in Arizona where he survived on "smokes and cokes," biding his time imitating Dale Crover drum licks between jam sessions.
Guitarist Bryan Giles now plays in Portland beer-metal champions Red Fang.
