DJANA VALLESPIR - REVUELTA 2011
Confrontational, in your face and self-explanatory are the adjectives that come to mind when describing the unique sound of new album ‘Revuelta’ from Djana Vallespir; 10 songs about murder (‘Dirty Job’), revenge (‘Rotten Rita´), and benders (‘Me Gusta La Tequila’) tell the story of a no-nonsense artist who likes to deliver her songs with gusto.
Cinematically dramatic effects and humor combined with mellow melodic pop and edgy rock, topped with Djana’s sweet, raspy voice; the sound is sensual, dangerous, uncompromising. Djana herself refers to the sultry compilation as ‘Garage-pop’.
Things really took off in 2009. As indicated by the album’s title, Djana’s got Spanish blood running in her veins and has visited Majorca numerous times throughout her life.
In 2009, while in Majorca she met up with twins and childhood friends Damien Tejedor Llabres and Carlos Tejedor Llabres whom since seeing Djana last had become musicians and producers. That’s when the idea for ‘Revuelta’ was born.
In the summer of 2010 Djana went to Majorca with her suitcase full of ideas and songs. During 14 scolding hot days she, musician and producer Morten Elley and her Spanish childhood friends passed the instruments round creating the fire, warmth and passion of the 10 songs on Revuelta.
‘It’s a dream come true’, Djana admits who’s had the idea of releasing her own album since getting inspired by April March, PJ Harvey and Brenda Lee in her early teens. ‘I haven’t been ready until now’, ’I take my time’, the singer adds, who by the way also works as a graphic artist (exhibited her work at Gallery Olsen Copenhagen through April, before the exhibit moves to Minden, Germany in June).
But for now focus is on the music: stripped down garage sound but with wide-ranging appeal.
Brace yourselves and welcome Djana Vallespir and ‘Revuelta’. 10 songs, no bullshit.
