Malfunkshun is a an American rock band, formed in 1980 by Andrew Wood (1966-1990) and his brother Kevin Wood. Alongside with bands such as Green River, formed in 1983, they are considered pioneers of what would become grunge. Combining elements of glam rock with guitar distortion, the first appeared (along with other notable Seattle bands like Soundgarden, Green River and The Melvins) on the compilation LP, Deep Six (1986).
The earliest incarnation of Malfunkshun (1980-1981) had Dave Rees on bass and David Hunt on drums, but the band soon became the power trio that would gain prominence on the Seattle scene: Andrew Wood (vocals, bass), Kevin Wood (guitar) and Regan Hagar (drums). Using makeup and flashy glam-style clothing in a nod to KISS and other favorite bands, Malfunkshun was known for their dynamic live shows. They recorded much of their material, but when the band dissolved in 1987, they had no official release to their name yet.
Dissolving, but never formally disbanding, Malfunkshun took a back seat to the jam sessions Andrew Wood and Regan Hagar had begun with Green River members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Andrew became increasingly involved with drugs. During his years with Malfunkshun he had already checked into drug rehab, putting Malfunkshun on hold. His addiction worsened while he fronted Mother Love Bone and in March 1990 Andrew overdosed on heroin and tragically passed away on 19 March 1990.
A compilation of Malfunkshun demos and recordings from 1986 to 1987 were released on Stone Gossard and Regan Hagar's Loosegroove label in 1995 as Return to Olympus: the largest major label release of the band's material.
Post-Andrew Wood...
In 2002 Kevin Wood teamed up with Mother Love Bone drummer Greg Gilmore to record the 'Her Eyes' CD. In 2005 Kevin Wood teamed up with Regan Hagar and Shawn Smith to record the Monument album under the Malfunkshun moniker. It was released in 2006 on Wammybox Records.
In 2010 Universal Music released 'Malfunkshun: the Andy Wood Story', a documentary featuring interviews and footage from Malfunkshun's early days. Included in the box set was a re-release of Return to Olympus and a collection of Andrew's solo material. In 2011 Jeff Loftis and Mike Stone joined the band and began recording and playing out. In 2021, the band's latest line-up wrote, recorded and released the EP Glow.
