Being stingy with the kind of release that pop music consumers are conditioned to expect on demand is a risky move. But in the four years since Steve first played guitar in Katie’s college band, Mumble News, the two have found ways to accentuate the visceral element in each other’s compositions even as the pop elements are being obscured by psychedelic fog.
What’s more, Katie and Steve say that the SVS rhythm section has pushed the songs far beyond their original visions. Harrison Seiler is a trained jazz drummer with a knack for cinematic cymbal work, while Wayne Whittaker (who met Katie when she was chilling on her stoop with her pet rabbit, which somehow led to a long conversation about Wilco) is as skilled and practiced at the bass as he is at obsessing over the Bruins.
“When we put Harrison and Wayne in our situation, they adapted to it and interpreted what we had already done,” says Katie. “It’s fun, not just working with good musicians but with like-minded people.”
Grateful as they are for what Whittaker and Seiler brought to Unlimited Circulation, Steve and Katie are eager to see what SVS is able to produce with all four parts in motion from day one.
“We’re already starting to write together as a group and I think that’s reflected [in the new material],” says Steve. “There’s a little bit more of a swagger to it. It’s a little more dirty and a little bit sexier.”
