The Lentil Collective happened one balmy autumn afternoon in Cape Town, South Africa in early 2011. Chris Davidson, also known as ‘Die Baard van die Baai’ ('The Beard of the Bay'), had received numerous complaints from irate neighbours concerning frantic mandolin playing from the direction of his new tenants’ study. This was, of course, music to Die Baard’s ears, especially considering his penchant for the stringed instruments of old and inherent rebellious streak.
After pleasantries between Chris and Nick Jones were dispensed with in the form of a tune or two, Chris realised that the prodigiously talented young Devonian's skill had to be reigned in to the Peninsular folk scene. Stephan Willemse, another of Chris’ tenants who had played a bit of bass at some long-forgotten time in the past, joined them... and thus The Lentil Collective was born.
The Lentil Collective played their first ever gig opening for Delta Blue for the underground Midnight Sessions label at an undisclosed location on the barren and stormy West Coast of South Africa, followed by gigs at infamous folk clubs around the Peninsula.
The Lentil Collective's demo album 'The Cottage Club Demo Sessions' was recorded over a weekend at the legendary Bill Knight's haven in Kommetjie, Cape Town, and their debut album, entitled 'Drawings of Clouds' is set for release in winter 2012.
The Lentil Collective are on hiatus as of winter 2012 while Nick Jones travels Europe & North America.
