The duo, consisting of Dorthe Gerlach (vocals) and Michael Hartmann (guitar) wrote this folksy pop ballad, about a couple struggling with “Goodbye”, on the morning after a party in their flat, the track picking up that melancholic ‘day after’ vibe; rainy, dusty and sour. They met while Gerlach was busking in Hartmann’s hometown, the two instantly hitting it off under the lure and lore of Danish winters and Fleetwood Mac albums. There’s certainly the charm of Stevie Nicks in Dorthe Gerlach, the singer also growing up amid Dolly Parton and Tracy Chapman records, influencing her distinct, characteristic voice that lends itself so well to Hartmann’s structure and the fragility of their debut album. ‘The Sound of Hush’ is a collaboration of folk, pop, blues and rock in sound that balances the emblematic light and dark corners of their songs. “You know, a happy song doesn’t take the weight out of a sad song, it underlines it, and vice versa”, says Hartmann on the emotional eclecticism of the album. With a clear folk ethos, the album covers different moods and sides of life; from twisted minds, love and murder, to revenge, hope and fear… and everything in between. It’s an album that wears its influences and heritage proudly. A confidently written collection of songs, ‘A Lifetime’ is about loss staying with you, ‘Champs Élysées’ spinning a bittersweet tale of a hopeful, hapless girl… both broad, approachable songs, while ‘Imperfect’ writes a more quirky yet personal love note. The Sound of Hush have always found a place, and a platform, for their music in Denmark, their rootsy, classic county sound with pop sensibility certainly stepping them out from the Danish mainstream.
