'WHO IS JAMES ARTHUR? WHAT IS A MANHUNT?
James Arthur is a Texan hick who spent a lotta time as the driving force behind some of the best '90s underground garage/punk/psych bands -- Fireworks, Necessary Evils, Feast of Snakes and the Golden Boys, among others -- recording for all the hippest labels of the day like Crypt, In The Red, Sympathy, even appearing on fine Aussie imprints Au-go-go and Dropkick. He's been dormant for a while, distilling a toxic brew of psychedelic noise in the basement of his ranch in the Hill Country outside of Austin.
He's just got together a new band, JAMES ARTHUR'S MANHUNT, and has recorded an LP for Australian taste-makers Aarght! Records. We are proud to bring you the first such JA foray in some time. We brought you Eddy Current Suppression Ring, the Ooga Boogas, UV Race and Super Wild Horses so you know damn well you should listen to it. Manhunt will be touring Australia in August & September [2009] in support of the LP, playing at both Flip Out Festivals in Melbourne and Sydney, with a handful of side shows.
We don't know what a manhunt is. James is kinda gay. Which is cool and all, and ballsy for a Texan.'

'The James Arthur's Manhunt LP was a record I wish people would have talked about more, including myself. Great record, great band, great dude. JA always seems to be standing just slightly in the shadows, out of the spotlight enough where you have to make an effort to see him. I think it's on purpose. But those who do choose to look outside the hype-sters and flavors-of-the-minute reap the rewards here, from a legendary player on the garage rock scene for many years. From Fireworks to Necessary Evils, to another greatly underappreciated band/record via A Feast of Snakes, to the OG line-up of Golden Boys and other peripheral acts from the Texas and Memphis scenes, the guy has an impeccable catalog behind him. Arthur is in full-on Texan Hawkwind mode here, wrapping one track around both sides in swirlingly psychedelic fashion: steady drum drive (from OBNIII, this guy is fucking everywhere!), quasi-dimensional guitar exploration, oscillating vocals. This was made for a freakout backed by a liquid light show and a tab or two. A meaty single that has me craving for another LP's worth of streched out blasters like this.(RK)'

Another Texan proving that the sun can do some serious DAMAGE. Ex-Necessary Evils/Fireworks/A Feast of Snakes guitar slinger proves he was the noise-minded one behind all those Nineties ITR records. Oh my. It plays like a Greatest Hits package of the intros & segues on the 'Sicko Inside Me' LP, but fleshed out to the max. Mostly (but not all) instrumental and dealing in arid tumbleweed lore and sci-fi rotgut seizures, Manhunt gives James a reason to get all schnockered up and expel his inner demons via 4-track. Just in time for Halloween, no less. The songs with vocals (like "The Cougar") lean towards Adkins-ian hillbilly, but with the added flavor of an even outer-outside mind. Maybe not that out. The chicken has been left by the curb. A smashed southern R&B and garage sound in the same vein as his recent namesake singles or 68’ Comeback…if they was NUTS. During "Strong Back" ya’d think Jeffrey Evans was being cattle prodded to yarble at the mic. The weird punk western within hints at elements of lost Morricone scores, surfin’ Smegma, late-era Savage Republic, and even some subdued Caroliner Rainbow thanks to a banjo sproutin’ up. "Bango" is built around the Johnny Cash "Folk Singer" rhythm and then all fucked up upon real good. A whack-a-doo cover of Simply Saucer’s "Low Profile" nestles nicely into the mix. Messy and fun all around. Not sure how many of these are (or will be) pressed…it’s coming from Australia. Cover illustration is amazing….and sums up the feeling within pretty damn good. Headscratcher of 2009, next to that Factorymen record. This CDr (100 made) is what he was tossing around these parts during Budget Rock. All you had to do was compare Black Flag tattoos to get one!
