New Wave was the name of a unique project and get together in Dutch hip hop in 2015.
A large group of independent Dutch hip hop artists got together for ten days in February 2015 on the isle of Schiermonnikoog. What they brought home was a surprisingly good album of original music: a compilation album of solo tracks and collaborations, entitled New Wave. However, it felt so much like a group effort that New Wave king of became a group name as well. The tracks may be scrobbled as tracks by the individuals creators, but also as New Wave tracks.
The idea for the New Wave sessions came from Kees de Koning, president of Amsterdam's Top Notch hip hop label. The project was made possible with the financial support of Buma Music Academy. The rappers and musicians involved were: Ronnie Flex, Jonna Fraser, Lil' Kleine, Bokoesam, Idaly, Lijpe, SFB (featuring Frenna, Jandro, KM and Priceless), D-Double, Ares, Afriki, Cartiez, Def Major, Ramiks, Monsif, Spanker, Krankjoram, Jack $hirak and Garrincha.
New Wave had amassed more than 80 million streams by the end 2015 (and nearly 350 million ten years later) and won the prestigious 2016 Popprijs in The Netherlands. Many of the participants went on to become successful hiphop artists in their own right. The single 'Drank en drugs' by Lil' Kleine & Ronnie Flex became a huge hit and a controversial Dutch classic.
In June 2025 the New Wave collective announced four anniversary shows at Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome in February 2026.
