Established in Brighton in 2007, The Mariner’s Children are an English folk rock band. The band was founded by multi-instrumentalists Benedict Rubinstein and Daniel Matthews after a chance meeting in Vietnam. The duo returned to Brighton for University and discovered a mutual fondness for revival music (Pentangle, John Fahey, Fairport Convention). Later joined by fiddler and vocalist Lizzie Ogle, the band toured the UK as a 3-piece. 2009 brought on many changes for the band line-up, including the departure of Ogle and the addition of Emma Gatrill (vocals, accordion), Marcus Hamblett (bass), Emma Kramer (violin), Becca Mears (cello), and Felix Weldon (drums).
Now residing in London, the band creates confessional tales with an underlying darkness; songs that mesh the intricate guitar interplay of Pentangle with the barn-storming raucousness of Arcade Fire. The band members lend their talents to Laura Marling, Willy Mason, Peggy Sue, Broken Social Scene, Damo Suzuki (Can), Sons Of Noel And Adrian, Alessi’s Ark, and Eyes & No Eyes, amongst countless others. Songs drift from sparse, delicate understatement to thunderous intensity in the blink of an eye. Following on from their critically-acclaimed New Moore Island EP, The Mariner's Children released the Sycamore EP in early Spring 2013. The band is slated to embark on their first North American tour in Autumn 2013 to coincide with the release of their first full-length album.
