The Ultimate Open Mic List for Oregon and Vancouver

Notorious Kelly Nov 23 2009 8:27P 27

You've got a song, a poem, a joke, or something - we wanna HEAR it!
A skit, an act, part of a movie or play that you like - we wanna SEE it!
No matter what you've got, there's a place on this list to PERFORM it!
I promise we will applaud no matter what. May lead to bigger things: paying gigs,
collaborations with other artists - who KNOWS?!?
Maybe you're not a performer, but just want to witness some of the most creative,
intelligent and beautiful people on the planet.
Well, without an audience, it's just rehearsal. It isn't a show without YOU!
Come be a part of it!

Open mics and jams come and go regularly, so it's a good idea to call and confirm
details before attending one for the first time. Please let me know of any additions/deletions/corrections.
Now - COME SHOW US YOUR STUFF!
(Open Mic tips at the end)

There are other occasional open mics that are not widely-advertised.
I'll gladly post them if the host provides the details.
_________________________________________________________________

Open mics can be a memorable time of performance, inspiration and fun.

They can occasionally be a bummer if the host doesn't run things fairly and professionally
or artists are inconsiderate - it's a good preview of the ups and downs in the performing
arts world.

Hosts: The performers are your customers. The people staring doe-eyed at glowing
laptop screens will be there with or without you; it's the performers whom you are
there to serve.
This means making them feel welcome, helping to make their performance sound as
good as possible, and firmly dealing with selfish egoists.

The greatest responsibility of an open mic host is fair handling of The List.

The Signup procedure should be clearly communicated both online and prior to each
signup so that there is no heartache amongst people who have a lot invested in trying
to perform that night.

The List should be in possession and control of The Host at all times to ensure
that there is no monkey business i.e. one person signing up multiple friends, names
being crossed out, etc. I have seen people walk out and others get close to violence
due to shoddy List practices. Regardless of how seemingly-well you handle everything
else:
YOU ARE A FAILURE AS A HOST IF YOU DO NOT MONITOR THE LIST AND ENSURE THAT SIGN
UPS ARE HANDLED FAIRLY.
I speak on behalf of the Many who have suffered due to some hosts' lack of excellence.

If pre-signups are available the procedure should be clearly posted online, on all
advertisements, and explained before each show. If this is not done, there is a
good chance of creating bad will in the artist community.

It seems fairest to have sign-ups a half hour prior to show. Any earlier than that
is a burden on the artists.

This is the most comprehensive and awesome Open Mic list to have ever been assembled. Our good friend and super rad-dude Notorious Kelly has spent many years putting together this list and it's testament to the mans maddening dedication to making/keeping Portland (and beyond) a superb and well organized community of performers and artists.
NK has finally made it big in the world and has set on a Coolio style Fantastic Voyage. He graciously left us as keepers of the List - we're looking for you guys to help us keep it updates and current so if you see any errors/omissions/updates/room for improvement - please let us know and post your comments here!

  3. Regarding the Friday Open Mic at Po'Shines, the last I checked they are no longer doing open mic Fridays. This was, of course, a couple of months ago, so they should call to check and see before going. Thanks.

  4. Is this the way to submit to the list? Aaron's Wine Cellar and Piano Bar, 322 SE 82nd Ave 1/2 blk N of Stark next to All Way Warm has open mike/jam every Friday night at 8:00. Host Carol Holden and pianist Doug Westberg at the Yamaha Grand. First Friday of the month is Acoustic Songwriter Circle. Second Fri is Acoustic Jam w/ Doug Westberg. Third Friday is Singers In The Round hosted by Carol Holden (live "Karaoke"--bring your songs--Doug will accompany you in your key!), 4th Fri is Cabaret Night, 5th Fri is Audience Choice. No electric instruments please. Call 360-721-1414 or write carollinesco@aol.com.

Apparently it needs some love. Please help!

  13. Please let me know of any alternative folk open mics I'm a cross between carol king and disturbed... I know quite the contradiction but thats why I call it alternative folk or better yet just/joan

  14. This sounds like such fun!! I only saw one open mic in Salem at Cafe' Noir and everyone was so good.
There is also The Grand Hall in Portland where I am going on Oct. 16th to get up and sing a couple of songs Acapella. It is on my bucket list, what can I say!!!

  19. This is a great list, however, it would be most helpful if the open mics were categorized, i.e. music, comedy, poetry, etc.
Then one could search just under the category in which they are interested in instead of having to read all of them or worse, having to contact each one that does not have it stated what kind of open mic it is. Thank you!

  20. show-bot!

yeah, this is one of the many things we've been meaning to improve for the longest time now... I'm not sure this list is much valid anymore seeing as NK assembled this back in '09. I would encourage anybody interested in open mics to check out the actual calendar at this point as it will be more up to date. Anybody that wants to list their open mic is welcome to do so - venues can also email us listings (listings@pc-pdx.com) and we will get all your events posted.

  21. Thorne Lounge at 4260 SE Hawthorne Blvd in SE PDX has open mic every Wednesday 7-10pm. 3 songs - full PA set up. This is a great venue that also schedules live music Thurs, Fri and Sat nights. The open mic is a great way for us to hear if you are interested in booking a show. E-mail Rachel at thornelounge@gmail.com to presign up or arrive early on Wednesday. www.facebook.com/thornelounge for weekly updates. Musicians who play receive happy hour pricing. www.thornelounge.com
