History:
In November we had a small fund raiser to buy sleeping bags for the homeless. We generated $100 and bought three military intermediate grade bags rated to 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit at a discount from Andy & Bax and donated them to the "Red Door" at the Down Town Chapel. Everyone thought the fund raiser went well so we decided to do it again. In December we had another fund raiser and generated $200 and bought and donated six of the same sleeping bags. However Andy & Bax notified us that their cost had gone up and they could not give us the same discount again, but they could give us their standard 10% discount for ten items or more.
Goal:
So to get the discount we need to raise atleast $400 dollars because these bags are $40 dollars a piece. If we raise that amount then we can get eleven bags and every additional bag would be %10 off. So to reach our target we decided to make the fund raiser a four night festival, and because we have fifteen artists, we should be able to generate atleast enough money to buy one sleeping bag per artist, which would be a fund raising goal of $540. This may not seem like a lot, but if every person in the world tried to help take care of just one other person in need, then the world would be a lot better place, and we want to do our part. Also this event is not just about raising money, but raising the visibility of the issue of homelessness to the public who might not hear about it from the mainstream media; and to raise the consciousness of all the musicians and fans involved by giving them an opportunity to get personally involved in helping someone.
Planned Action:
We have discussed distributing the bags ourselves this time, since there are plenty of homeless people right around Laughing Horse, some that we know personally. We are accepting the following items for drop off anytime during 11AM to 7PM Monday through Saturday: tarps, tents, duffle and camping bags, winter and rain coats, gloves, socks, boots and food. We would like to make a warm meal that we could take out to the homeless when we distribute the bags, and then sit down and have a conversation with them. We are looking for volunteers to help distribute fliers and bags. $40 buys one sleeping bag
$36 buys one sleeping bag at 10% off
Paypal charges 3% for use of it's site.
You can also drop off a check at Laughing Horse 11AM to 7PM Mon - Sat.
