Aug. 01--Portland Fire and Rescue Bureau said a candle left burning throughout the night was the cause of an early morning fire today at a North Portland home. The blaze displaced five residents and left a firefighter with minor head and neck injuries.
Portland Fire crews arrived on the scene at 6:53 a.m. to a column of black smoke coming from the house at 5934 N. Borthwick Ave.
Officials were told all five residents, three men and two women, were out of the house when they arrived.
Four of the residents had to jump from a window to escape. One of the men suffered a shoulder injury and a woman twisted her ankle when they were escaping. The Red Cross was at the scene to assist the residents.
Twenty-five firefighters assisted in putting out the fire nearly 30 minutes after crews arrived on scene.
As officials began inspecting the scene after the fire had been extinguished, one of the firefighters, Rian Fields, an eight-year veteran, was injured when a piece of ceiling hit him in the head and neck. His injuries were mild and he remained at work today, said Portland Fire spokeswoman Kim Kosamas
Officials estimate damages to the house at $200,000. It is worth $250,000. In addition, belongings lost inside the house total $75,000.
Kosamas said the house is about 800 square feet. According to the city of Portland, it has one floor.
