AC/DC are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973. Their music has been described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, though the band refers to it simply as "rock and roll." They are regarded as a significant influence on the new wave of British heavy metal and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. With more than 200 million records sold worldwide, they are among the best-selling music artists in history.
AC/DC were founded by brothers Angus Young (lead guitar) and Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar), along with Colin Burgess (drums), Larry Van Kriedt (bass guitar), and Dave Evans (lead vocals). After several lineup changes, the band released their debut album "High Voltage" in 1975, which was issued only in Australasia. The lineup stabilized following the release of "Let There Be Rock" in 1977, consisting of the Young brothers, Phil Rudd on drums, Cliff Williams on bass guitar, and Bon Scott on vocals.
Seven months after the release of "Highway to Hell" in 1979, Bon Scott died of alcohol poisoning. He was replaced by English singer Brian Johnson, whose first album with the band, "Back in Black" (1980), was dedicated to Scott’s memory and went on to become the second best-selling album of all time. Their next release, "For Those About to Rock" (1981), became their first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200. During the recording of "Flick of the Switch" (1983), Rudd was dismissed and replaced by Simon Wright, who was later succeeded by Chris Slade in 1989.
The band experienced renewed commercial success with the 1990 album "The Razors Edge," their only studio release featuring Slade. Rudd rejoined AC/DC in 1994 and performed on five subsequent albums beginning with "Ballbreaker" (1995). Their fifteenth studio album, "Black Ice" (2008), achieved their highest chart positions since "For Those About to Rock" and was the second best-selling album of that year.
The band’s lineup remained stable for two decades until 2014, when Malcolm Young retired due to early-onset dementia, from which he died in 2017. Around the same time, Rudd faced legal charges related to threats and drug possession. Malcolm was replaced by his nephew Stevie Young, who made his recording debut on "Rock or Bust" (2014). During the accompanying tour, Slade filled in for Rudd, while Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses temporarily replaced Johnson after he was advised to stop performing due to hearing issues. Following the tour, Williams retired, and the band went on hiatus.
In September 2020, AC/DC announced the reunion of the "Rock or Bust" lineup and released their seventeenth studio album, "Power Up," two months later. The supporting tour was announced in February 2024, featuring drummer Matt Laug and bassist Chris Chaney as live members, while Rudd and Williams remain official members of the band.
