AC/DC is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Their music has been described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, though the band refers to it simply as rock and roll.
After undergoing several lineup changes in its early years, AC/DC released its debut album "High Voltage" in 1975. The classic lineup soon solidified around the Young brothers, vocalist Bon Scott, drummer Phil Rudd, and bassist Mark Evans. Evans was dismissed from the band in 1977 and replaced by Cliff Williams, who has appeared on every AC/DC album since 1978’s "Powerage". In February 1980, shortly after the success of the album "Highway to Hell", Bon Scott died from acute alcohol poisoning. The band briefly considered disbanding but chose to continue at the request of Scott’s family, recruiting Brian Johnson, formerly of the band Geordie, as the new lead singer. Later that year, AC/DC released "Back in Black", their first album with Johnson, which was dedicated to Scott's memory. The album achieved massive commercial success and is one of the best-selling albums of all time.
In 1981, the band released "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)", which became their first album to reach number one in the United States. Before the release of their 1983 album "Flick of the Switch", Rudd left the band and was replaced by Simon Wright, who was later succeeded by Chris Slade in 1989. AC/DC experienced a commercial resurgence in 1990 with the release of "The Razors Edge", their only album featuring Slade. Rudd returned to the band in 1994 and has since performed on several albums, beginning with "Ballbreaker" in 1995. Their 2008 album "Black Ice" became the second-highest-selling album of that year and marked their biggest chart success since "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)", reaching number one in numerous countries.
The band's lineup remained unchanged for two decades until 2014, when Malcolm Young retired due to early-onset dementia; he died in 2017. He was replaced by his nephew Stevie Young, who appeared on the 2014 album "Rock or Bust". During the album’s tour, Chris Slade returned to fill in for Phil Rudd due to legal issues. In 2016, Brian Johnson stepped away from touring due to hearing loss, and Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses filled in as vocalist for the remainder of that year’s tour. Bassist Cliff Williams retired at the conclusion of the tour, and the band entered a four-year hiatus. In September 2020, AC/DC announced the reunion of the "Rock or Bust" lineup and released their seventeenth studio album, "Power Up", in November of that year.
AC/DC has sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 75 million in the United States, making them the ninth-highest-selling artist in the United States and the sixteenth-best-selling artist globally. "Back in Black" alone has sold an estimated 50 million units worldwide, making it the highest-selling album by a band and the second-highest-selling album by any artist. With 25 million units sold in the US, it is the fourth highest-selling album in that country. AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2003. The band was ranked fourth on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and seventh on MTV’s list of the Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked AC/DC at number 72 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, with producer Rick Rubin calling them "the greatest rock and roll band of all time". In 2010, VH1 ranked them number 23 in its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
