Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley (April 27, 1951 - October 16, 2025) was an American musician best known as the original lead guitarist, occasional vocalist, and founding member of the hard rock band Kiss. Adopting the stage persona of the Spaceman (or Space Ace), Frehley was central to the signature sound and visual identity of Kiss during their rise to international fame in the 1970s. Known for his technical innovations, melodic riffing, and theatrics—including smoke-emitting and light-up guitars—he contributed significantly to classic Kiss tracks such as "Cold Gin", "Parasite", and "Shock Me". Frehley was part of Kiss from its inception in 1973 until his departure in 1982. During his initial tenure with the group, he released a critically acclaimed and commercially successful self-titled solo album in 1978 as part of the simultaneous four-member Kiss solo album release. His album featured the hit single "New York Groove", written by Russ Ballard. Creative differences and dissatisfaction with the band's musical direction led him to leave Kiss to pursue new projects. In 1984, Frehley formed the group Frehley's Comet. The band released its self-titled debut album in 1987, featuring the single "Into the Night", followed by "Second Sighting" and the live EP "Live-1" in 1988. He subsequently dropped the band name and released "Trouble Walkin'" under his own name in 1989. Frehley rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a highly successful worldwide reunion tour featuring the original line-up in full makeup. He performed on the 1998 studio album "Psycho Circus" and remained with the group until his second departure in 2002. Following his final departure from Kiss, Frehley resumed his solo career. He released several solo albums including "Anomaly" (2009), "Space Invader" (2014), "Origins Vol. 1" (2016), "Spaceman" (2018), "Origins Vol. 2" (2020), and "10,000 Volts" (2024). As a member of Kiss, Frehley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. He passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 74.
