Alanis Nadine Morissette (born June 1, 1974) is a Canadian and American singer, musician, and songwriter. She is known for her mezzo-soprano voice and confessional songwriting, and has sold over 60 million records worldwide. Her awards include a Brit Award, seven Grammy Awards, fourteen Juno Awards, and nominations for two Golden Globe Awards and a Tony Award.
Morissette began her career in Canada in the early 1990s with the dance-pop albums "Alanis" (1991) and "Now Is the Time" (1992). After moving to Los Angeles, she released the alternative rock album "Jagged Little Pill" (1995), which became one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album earned her five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, making her the youngest recipient of that category at the time. Her follow-up album, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" (1998), featured an experimental sound and included the single "Uninvited" for the film "City of Angels," which won two Grammy Awards and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
From 2002, Morissette took on full production responsibilities for her fifth album, "Under Rug Swept," which earned her the Jack Richardson Producer of the Year Award. Her song "Wunderkind" for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. She continued to release albums including "So-Called Chaos" (2004), "Flavors of Entanglement" (2008), "Havoc and Bright Lights" (2012), "Such Pretty Forks in the Road" (2020), and "The Storm Before the Calm" (2022).
Morissette holds the record for the most number-one singles on the weekly Billboard Alternative Songs chart by a female soloist, group leader, or duo member. Her first three internationally released studio albums topped the Billboard 200, and her next four albums reached the top 20. Singles including "You Oughta Know," "Hand in My Pocket," "Ironic," "You Learn," "Head Over Feet," "Uninvited," "Thank U," and "Hands Clean" achieved top 40 positions in major international charts. VH1 ranked her as the 53rd-greatest woman in rock and roll, and she was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2005.
