While “They sound kind of like Pavement” has become clichéd parlance in the music world, it still holds meaning for this talented Oakland five-piece. Indifference, malaise, and anger are expressed in singer David McKay’s vocals in often monotone phrasings as well as the ocassional wild screaming. Although his lyrics are more intelligent than your average pop song, the melodies are often as catchy. Backed by a collection of guitar, bass, drums, Rhodes, violin, cello, flute and synth, the instrumentation includes lush jazz nine and thirteen chords, classically styled flute and violin runs, synth sine-waves and noise, pensive cello lines and R&B drumming, all crafted by performers with classical, jazz and pop experience.
The Alright Class's 2009 self-titled EP has received steady play on both KALX, Berkeley and KCSB, Santa Barbara. “The Fall” was the subject of an animated video adventure released in early 2010 and called "intricately crafted and overall adorable" by theBayBridged.com, and recording on their first full-length LP was completed this March at New, Improved Studios (Deerhoof, Beulah, Mike Watt, Why? and Thao with the Get Down Stay Down). Alright Class members are or have been parts of: Little Wings, Rubies, Super Furry Animals, Kissing Tigers, Quinn Devoux and Belly of the Whale. Since forming in 2008, the group has played regular gigs in the bay area, toured both coasts and is planning a series of dates from Missoula to Memphis for this summer.
