Always epic and emotional, often playful, eerie and even grotesque, the songs of Architeuthis allow for the listener to be consumed within them. Unclassifiable, their work blends modern, complicated, pulsating drum beats with classically influenced piano that also recalls jazz, and occasionally ragtime. While not quite fitting into the categories of Post-Metal/Rock, or Dark Jazz, their unique combination allows Architeuthis to exist outside the confined genres of popular music, creating a refreshing and meaningful sound, yet to be jaded and consumed by the music industry and its niche trends.
When playing live, preferably in dark, cavernous conditions, the members of Architeuthis lose all autonomy from their instruments and the physicality of their playing is devoured in the grand emotion of their songs. Their work is transporting, meditative, metaphysical, sometimes frightening, and deeply engaging.
It would be a gross understatement to characterize Architeuthis simply as producers of background music suitable for film, or the like. When in fact, their music is far too dynamic to do so. Despite the simple combination of piano and drums, the songs are full and stand on their own as original stories and complicated arrangements. Never dull, always building and growing, the songs of Architeuthis cycle through the listener's mind and manipulate their emotions, allowing for a unique and highly personal listening experience.
Architeuthis was born in Berkeley, California and is comprised of John Morgan on piano and Barret Baumgart on drums.
