In his sophomore year of high school, guitarist and songwriter Blake Straus got kicked out of his first punk band for playing Jazz chords instead of power chords. This was the the catalyst for him to start writing his own music, one that could incorporate both of these genres he loved. In 2006, Straus met vocalist Jess Imme at a local punk show in LA. Imme was the drummer and vocalist of the headlining act that night. Straus immediately approached Imme after, bought her drinks, and set up a band practice for the next morning. Big Moves was born. Straus met drummer Taylor Dexter through their high school Jazz band. The three independently recorded and released their first album “In the Beginning” in the fall of 2008. Dave Corwin and Wes Singerman studied Jazz Performance with Straus and Dexter in college, and have joined the group since. The 5 piece recorded and released the "Lanterns EP" in April of 2011.
The release of Big Moves' first full length, “In the Beginning” garnered the band radio play on KYSR, KXLU, KPFK, KCSB and earned them a spot in the top 10 albums of 2009 at LA indie colossus KCRW, with DJ Garth Trinidad calling them his “new favorite band”. They have shared the stage with Tera Melos, El Ten Eleven, Miniature Tigers, Funeral Party, Holly Miranda, The One AM Radio, etc. and completed a successful West Coast tour with indie darlings Love Grenades in the summer of 2009. They were also featured on the cover of both Music Connection and The Deli Los Angeles music publications in May of 2009.
Since the release of their Lanterns EP, Big Moves has been named "one of the best 8 unsigned bands in Los Angeles" by LA Times music columnist David Greenwald. The band successfully completed a residency for the month of September 2011 at the Bootleg Theatre in Echo Park, and continue to perform around Los Angeles. They currently are in the process of trying to fund their next full length record. Both "In the Beginning" and "Lanterns EP" are out now on iTunes.
