Two artists under the same name,
1) Black Church is the former solo project of Los Angeles native Kim Free. All songs were recorded from 2008-2010, under her alias name Sunny Winters.
2) J. Wood of Grinning Death's Head, Order of Nine Angels, etc. Tape out on Bleak Environment.
1) Her compositions recall early ’80s recordings – This Mortal Coil, The Marine Girls, even occasionally Young Marble Giants – while still sitting comfortably alongside 21st century lo-fi indie music being made in bedrooms on laptop computers around the world.

1) Her compositions recall early ’80s recordings – This Mortal Coil, The Marine Girls, even occasionally Young Marble Giants – while still sitting comfortably alongside 21st century lo-fi indie music being made in bedrooms on laptop computers around the world. Synthesizer, bass, guitar and dreamy vocals (except for the instrumental recordings, of course) were the components that made up the Black Church sound.
Madeline Blue (2008), the first Black Church release was also the first release by the cassette label Living Tapes. It was limited to 100 copies and quickly sold out. Over the next three years, there would be four more Black Church releases, all cassette-only, all very limited edition, on three different labels including Tapemancy and Cave Life.
