1) Martin Hula (aka Bourek) is a musician, songwriter, producer, and celebrated graphic designer from a family of eccentric intellectuals living in village outside of Prague. In addition to being an in demand musician, artist, and producer, Hula often writes articles and gives provocative interviews on music, creativity, the music industry, and politics, that make him the talk of the Czech music scene.
He first came to attention with the synth-inflected post-hardcore band Ememvoodoopöká, which won for best Alternative album in the Czech Andel Awards in 2005. He then formed the dance-punk band Sporto, nominated for best electronic album in 2009. His next project is ahybrid alternative rap/electronic project Bonus, with a debut album called Konec civilizace [The End of Civilization].
The album was a significant departure from Czech hip hop standards, perhaps being the region's first "alternative" hip hop album. The second Bonus album, Náměstí míru pushed even futher into experimental territory, using acoustic instruments and lush arrangements more akin to Baroque pop than rap, with special guest appearances from Czech and American underground music luminaries such as Lush Life, Ondrej Jezek (OTK, Gurun Gurun), and Johana Švarcová (Kazety). For this innovation, Bonus won the first annual Apollo Music Prize (the Czech equivalent of the Mercury Prize). Hula has numerous side projects, from speed metal to experimental electronics to jazz, and also remixes and produces. He releases material on the label Starcastic, a premier home of Czech and Slovak avant-garde electronic and rock music and also distributor to many internationally renowned artists.
As Bonus, Hula has shared the stage with Odd Nosdam, Lushlife, Sole and the Skyrider Band, Bauchklang, Napszykłat, Saroos, Karaoke Tundra, Dub Pistols and many others. He can be found rocking festival crowds of thousands and garages full of metalhead teens with equal intensity. The current Bonus line-up includes bassist Machy and shoegaze leaning guitarist/producer Pek.lo, a mesmerizing stage show with video, and the cerebral and danceable mix of ferocious raps, off-kilter beats, well-crafted samples that makes Bonus an mesemrizing, innovative part of the rap and electronic music scene.
