Buckcherry is an American hard rock band from Anaheim, California, formed in 1995. The band released two albums, "Buckcherry" (1999) and "Time Bomb" (2001), before disbanding in 2002. Their debut album "Buckcherry" was certified gold and became DreamWorks Records' first album to achieve that status. In 2005, lead vocalist Josh Todd and lead guitarist Keith Nelson reformed the band with a new lineup. They released "15" in 2006, which included the singles "Crazy Bitch" and "Sorry", the latter reaching the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. The band subsequently released "Black Butterfly" (2008), "All Night Long" (2010), "Confessions" (2013), "Rock 'n' Roll" (2015), "Warpaint" (2019), "Hellbound" (2021), and "Vol. 10" (2023). Their eleventh studio album, "Roar Like Thunder", was released in June 2025.
Josh Todd grew up in Anaheim Hills and later lived in Lake Forest, California. He previously fronted the band Slamhound. He met guitarist Keith Nelson through a mutual contact, and the two recorded demos before forming a band with bassist Jonathan Brightman and drummer Devon Glenn under the name Sparrow. The group performed in the Los Angeles club scene and signed with DreamWorks Records. After receiving a legal notice from another band named Sparrow, they changed their name to Buckcherry. The name is a spoonerism of Chuck Berry, although the band has also stated it was inspired by a drag performer known as Buck Cherry.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 1999, produced by Terry Date. It included the singles "Lit Up", "For the Movies", "Dead Again" and "Check Your Head". Following the release, rhythm guitarist Yogi Lonich joined the group. The band toured extensively, including supporting Lenny Kravitz and performing at Woodstock 99, and later supported AC/DC in 2000. They then began work on their second album, "Time Bomb", released in 2001. The album received mixed critical reception and achieved lower commercial performance than their debut. Between 2001 and 2002, several members left the band, and Buckcherry went on hiatus in 2002 while early work on a third album remained unfinished.
During the hiatus, Josh Todd and Keith Nelson collaborated with former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum on a project that later became Velvet Revolver. Todd recorded material during early sessions but did not remain in the final lineup, which ultimately featured Scott Weiland as vocalist. Nelson received a songwriting credit on Velvet Revolver's song "Dirty Little Thing".
In 2005, Buckcherry reformed with Josh Todd and Keith Nelson joined by Stevie D., Jimmy Ashhurst and Xavier Muriel. The band released "15" in 2006, which marked a commercial resurgence and produced several successful singles. In 2006, the band was involved in a legal dispute relating to the filming of a music video, which was later resolved after verification of participant consent and age.
In 2008, Buckcherry participated in Crüe Fest alongside Mötley Crüe, Papa Roach, Sixx:A.M. and Trapt. Their album "Black Butterfly" was released in September 2008 and reached number eight on the Billboard 200, topping the rock album chart that week. Josh Todd also contributed guest vocals to Escape the Fate's album "This War Is Ours".
In 2009, Buckcherry toured with Kiss and performed at various international events. They released a live album, "Live & Loud 2009", featuring recordings from their Canadian tour.
The album "All Night Long" was released in 2010 and debuted in the top ten of the Billboard 200. The band toured extensively and released additional material, including the single "Christmas Is Here". They contributed the song "Wherever I Go" to the "Avengers Assemble" soundtrack. Their sixth studio album, "Confessions", was released in 2013.
The EP "Fuck" was released in 2014, with each track title containing the word included in the EP title. In 2015, Buckcherry released the album "Rock 'n' Roll". In 2016, the single "The Feeling Never Dies" featured Gretchen Wilson.
In 2017, Keith Nelson and Xavier Muriel left the band due to differences in direction. Kevin Roentgen and Sean Winchester joined as replacements. Kevin Roentgen later departed in 2020 and was replaced by Billy Rowe.
The album "Warpaint" was released in 2019. The band later signed recording plans for a new album, and in 2021 released "Hellbound", produced by Marti Frederiksen. The album was supported by the single "So Hott" and a North American tour.
In 2024, the band recorded their eleventh studio album in Nashville with Marti Frederiksen. "Roar Like Thunder" was released on June 13, 2025, preceded by the singles "Roar Like Thunder" and "Come On". The band announced touring activity for 2026.
