Chess King is an 80s-music cover band in Central Ohio. Named with a tongue-in-cheek homage to the 1980’s mall staple that sold Parachute pants, skinny leather ties, Members Only jackets, and striped sleeveless shirts to “fashionable” men, Chess King brings that same sense of fun back to the local music scene.
Chess King was formed in early 2007 when founding members and long time Orchestraville band and tour mates, keyboardist Parker Paul and drummer Keith Hanlon, decided the time was right for an alternative to cover the tunes from the 80’s. Their first call was to Pete Chimbidis, guitar virtuoso for the bands Sharp Circle and ÜberGroove, and Paul’s old friend from college. Pete, a veteran of playing this music in the 80s throughout Western Pennsylvania in his youth, was instantly sold on the idea. Next came the difficult job of finding a singer with the chops to sell the high-pitched, high-energy vocals that defined the decade of excess. Pete played some ÜberGroove recordings for Paul and Keith to listen to the singer, Damon Mollenkopf, and they all agreed it was the perfect match. Rounding out the band is the baby of the group, bassist Jason Monro (Sharp Circle, Jamie Ross, ÜberGroove). He may have been born in the 80’s, but he plays with a maturity well beyond his years; at only 21 years old, Jason was featured in Jazziz magazine.
At a time when the music of the 80s is back with a vengeance, with children of the ‘60s and ‘70s wanting to relive their party years, and their children becoming fans of the music that their parents just couldn’t let go, Chess King brings together a collection of highly talented musicians, and an enthusiasm for 80’s music that translates into the most complete and energetic show music fans of that great decade could ever ask for.
