Christopher Maurice Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, and actor. His music incorporates elements of R&B, pop, and hip-hop, and he is known for his vocal and dance performances. Brown has often been described by commentators and peers as one of the leading contemporary R&B artists, with comparisons frequently drawn between his performance style and that of Michael Jackson.
In 2004, Brown signed with Jive Records and released his self-titled debut studio album the following year. The album achieved triple platinum certification and produced the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "Run It!", making him the first male artist since 1995 to debut at number one on the chart. His second album, "Exclusive" (2007), was an international commercial success and featured the chart-topping single "Kiss Kiss."
In 2009, Brown was arrested and later pleaded guilty to felony assault of singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend. He was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service. That same year, he released his third studio album, "Graffiti," which received mixed reviews and was less commercially successful than his previous releases.
Brown’s fourth album, "F.A.M.E." (2011), became his first to reach number one on the Billboard 200 and included several hit singles, such as "Yeah 3x," "Look at Me Now," and "Beautiful People." The album earned him the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. His fifth album, "Fortune" (2012), also debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart.
Subsequent albums, including "X" (2014) and "Royalty" (2015), continued his commercial success, both reaching the top three of the Billboard 200. His eighth studio album, "Heartbreak on a Full Moon" (2017), a double album featuring 45 tracks, achieved gold certification within a week of release and was later certified double platinum. His ninth album, "Indigo" (2019), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the single "No Guidance," which set a record for the longest-running number one on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. The following year, "Go Crazy" surpassed that record. In 2022, the song "Under the Influence" from "Indigo" became a global sleeper hit after being re-released as a single.
Brown has sold more than 140 million records worldwide, ranking among the best-selling music artists globally. He holds multiple chart and certification records, including the most top 40 hits by an R&B singer, and the most RIAA gold and multi-platinum certified singles by a male artist. Billboard ranked him as the third most successful R&B/hip-hop artist of the 2010s decade, behind Drake and Rihanna. Throughout his career, Brown has received over 200 awards from more than 500 nominations.
In addition to his music career, Brown has appeared in several films and television productions. He made his film debut in "Stomp the Yard" (2007) and has acted in "This Christmas" (2007), "Takers" (2010), "Think Like a Man" (2012), and "Battle of the Year" (2013). He has also made guest appearances on television series, including "The O.C."
