Cortex was founded in Paris in 1974 by pianist, composer, and arranger Alain Mion. Heavily influenced by artists such as Bobby Timmons, Ray Charles, and Les McCann, Mion blended jazz with soul and funk. Their sound is a unique mix of jazz, funk, soul, bossa nova, psychedelic rock, and French chanson—creating a sound that is very funky yet simultaneously mellow, slightly melancholic, and somewhat surreal. The classic lineup included: • Alain Mion – piano/keyboards, composition, arrangements • Mireille Dalbray – vocals • Alain Gandolfi – drums/percussion • Jean Grevet – bass • Alain Labib – alto saxophone • Jean-Claude d'Agostini – guitar • Jo Pucheu – percussion Initially, Cortex did not seem like a future "cult band." They were a relatively short-lived French jazz-funk group from the 1970s that disbanded in the early 1980s. It was only decades later that their music was rediscovered by DJs and hip-hop producers. Their debut album, *Troupeau Bleu*, started out as an obscure French jazz record; decades later, American hip-hop producers discovered its drums, basslines, Rhodes passages, and melodic fragments, finding them to be perfect samples. The track "Huit Octobre 1971," in particular, has been sampled extensively. Cortex appears in the circles of artists such as MF DOOM, Tyler, the Creator, Kanye West,Lupe Fiasco, and Wiz Khalifa, among others. Alain Mion later revived the group—initially as Alain Mion & The New Cortex starting in 2009; Cortex continues to perform today with a new lineup. 2. A Swedish punk or post-punk band from Gothenburg. 3. A Spanish metalcore band that has been active since 1997. Read more on Last.fm.
