Not unlike the culture of Jubitz truck stop on Highway 99E in Portland, OR, Dad Works Hard is an amalgam of hard working Americans, endless nights, and a little “R and R” after the long haul that was fueled by a stash of gas station diet pills and the long banned “Four Loko” caffeinated malt liquor. Led by Danny Barker of Pittsburgh, PA, Dad Works Hard is rock and roll without frills. Barker, always wearing the same fake gold chain and a wife beater inexplicably covered in wing sauce and BBQ stains, drives the band with his ancient 50's-60's Sears Catalog equipment that still rips tits. There isn't a party Barker's not at, and there isn't a ripping 40-bar solo he hasn't played piss drunk.
Tyler “Moose” Jensen hails from highway intersections in California, Colorado and Alaska. A drummer-for- hire/day laborer, Moose put his sign down and joined Barker after a deal was struck in which Moose would rock exclusively for DWH. His days revolve around eating convenience store sandwiches, driving his 1990 Chevy Molester special around town and smoking hand rolled cigarettes. Aside from being described as a drummer, he's often referred to as a “real sweet guy.” Moose is the Captain of his own ship and plays by his own rules.
On the bass is Andrew Grimaldo. From Southern California, Grimaldo found himself heading north to Oregon in the late 90’s shortly after being let go from Chuck E. Cheese's for putting too much cheese on the pizzas. Andrew is the kind of guy that will fix your 87’ Lebaron for you even if you didn't ask him to. Sure he made it worse, but boy can he electrify a rhythm section. When he's not driving the only 74’ VW Bug in town with an 8-track deck still in it, he's controlling smooth bass lines while wearing cheap sunglasses to hide his 1000 yard stare; the product of bottom shelf whiskey and deep regrets.
Dad Works Hard is trashy, disco infused hard rock with all of the shouting, kicking, and beer can crushing that goes with it. These guys are a product of a garage in the Kenton district of North Portland, and play almost exclusively at the Kenton Club. Imagine neon signs, dirty ashtrays with cocaine residue in them, ageing retirees playing video lottery, and police sirens after a night of a little too much rocking. There's no irony here, they're about as genuine as it gets. Rock from the early 70's and 80's mixed with smoother rock finished with harder rock and topped with trucker speed; the sound is reminiscent of old American cars that are somehow still running, topless drunks, and the sort of record your dad put on the turntable when Bill and Jeff came over for another night of the kind of thing he and your mom used to fight about. Hard working-class music for hard working-class Americans, Dad Works Hard is the band that should have been playing when Patrick Swayze beat the snot out of Jimmy in Roadhouse.
