Death Grips is an American electronic hip hop and rock group formed in 2010 in Sacramento, California. The group consists of producers Zach Hill (drums) and vocalist Stefan Burnett, also known as MC Ride, with Andy Morin as a former co-producer and keyboardist. Although not the frontman, Hill has often been regarded as the primary creative force behind the project. Drawing from hip hop, punk rock, UK bass (dubstep and grime), noise rock and psychedelic rock, the group developed a distinctive and hard-to-classify sound that earned critical acclaim and a cult following, while their intense performance style and unconventional public presence brought widespread attention.
The group released the mixtape "Exmilitary" in April 2011, followed by their debut studio album "The Money Store" in 2012; both were met with critical praise. Shortly after signing to Epic Records in 2012, the group leaked their second album, "No Love Deep Web," in violation of their contract, leading to their dismissal from the label. They later founded the label Third Worlds in association with Harvest Records and released their third album, "Government Plates," in 2013. After a series of canceled performances, Death Grips announced their disbandment in July 2014 alongside the release of their fourth album, the double album "The Powers That B." The first disc, "Niggas on the Moon," was leaked by the group in 2014, and the second disc, "Jenny Death," was released in 2015. Before issuing "Jenny Death," the group released the instrumental album "Fashion Week" in early 2015. They later stated that they might continue making music and subsequently announced a world tour.
In 2015, Death Grips announced their fifth studio album, "Bottomless Pit," released in May 2016. Their sixth studio album, "Year of the Snitch," followed in June 2018. Their fourth EP, "Gmail and the Restraining Orders," was released in June 2019 to commemorate Warp Records' 30th anniversary. Beyond a collection of previously unreleased material added to their website in 2023, the band did not release new music for several years. In 2025, a leaked conversation between a fan and Morin sparked speculation that Death Grips had disbanded, but Hill and Burnett later stated that the group remained active. In November 2025, alongside Morin's departure, Death Grips announced that they were in the process of producing a new album to be announced.
