In a sincere effort not to exaggerate the sheer prowess and megalithic, erectile stature of Fall from Zero, we now present to you the epic saga of how these übergods among übermen became an überband:
The year 2010 dawned uneasily, yet hopeful, with several veteran bands of the local scene undergoing mid- to end of life crises. It would be a year of unprecedented turnover and re-shuffling of seasoned, determined musicians into new arrangements throughout the Portland/Vancouver metal scene. Some would say that the new bands created during this period were the best use of local talent, ever. People saying that were immediately executed; their severed heads displayed on pikes for amusement. “This is Metal, man! Don’t patronize us!” a member of the mob was heard to exclaim. It was, indeed, brutal.
One particular decade-old band known as Excessive Moderation had sought within its unfortunate death-throes a second guitarist, an episode which allowed for the initial meeting between guitarist Shawn Hooghkirk and bassist Ian Wengs. After the final collapse of the former project, they resolved with steadfast determination to begin anew. And so they embarked upon several months of writing and practicing, which almost amounted to absolutely nothing at all, except that one storage locker in Hazel Dell now had more carpeting on its walls than usual.
By the arrival of the standard Pacific-Northwestern rainstorms that September, Shawn and Ian had built up a long set-list of material, but alas, neither drummer nor singer to make possible the long wished-for opportunity to show off publicly. Until one day, their ad was answered by drummer Nathan Thomas and singer Cory Hammond, former members of Lost in Ashes (which is part of why the first sentence of this narrative is so damn clever – please pay attention, people!). Within weeks, the history of local music was forever warped beyond recognition, as Fall from Zero continued its stageward ascent toward worldwide fame. Eventually they added guitarist Joey Davenport to the lineup, another rock god from the Lost in Ashes days, to make the sound even more complete.
Please enjoy all three songs of the first demo and look forward to much, much more…
