Five Finger Death Punch, also abbreviated as 5FDP or FFDP, is an American heavy metal band from Las Vegas, Nevada, formed in 2005. The original lineup consisted of vocalist Ivan Moody, guitarists Zoltan Bathory and Caleb Andrew Bingham, bassist Matt Snell, and drummer Jeremy Spencer. Bingham was replaced by Darrell Roberts in 2006, who was then replaced by Jason Hook in 2009. Bassist Matt Snell left the band in 2010 and was replaced by Chris Kael in 2011. Drummer Jeremy Spencer left the band in 2018 due to ongoing back problems and was replaced by Charlie Engen. In October 2020, British guitarist Andy James joined as lead guitarist, replacing Jason Hook. Bathory and Moody remained the only constant members across all album releases.
The band’s debut album, "The Way of the Fist", was released in 2007 and achieved early commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies in the United States and later being certified gold. Their second album, "War Is the Answer" (2009), increased their mainstream visibility, debuting at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and later achieving platinum certification by the RIAA. The third studio album, "American Capitalist", was released in 2011 and also reached platinum status. Subsequent releases included "The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1" and "Volume 2" (both 2013), "Got Your Six" (2015), and "And Justice for None" (2018). These albums generally achieved gold or platinum certifications in the United States. The band released its eighth studio album, "F8", in 2020, followed by its ninth studio album, "AfterLife", in 2022. As of 2025, Five Finger Death Punch has released nine studio albums, along with one live album, four compilation albums, one extended play, and 33 singles.
The band’s early work included the independently released EP "Pre-Emptive Strike" in 2007. The lead single from their debut album, "The Bleeding", was released in 2007, followed by singles such as "Never Enough" and "Stranger Than Fiction". Their second album produced singles including "Hard to See", "Walk Away", "Dying Breed", "No One Gets Left Behind", and a cover of "Bad Company". The third album "American Capitalist" included singles such as "Under and Over It", "Remember Everything", "Coming Down", and "Back for More", the latter of which also appeared on the "Madden NFL 12" soundtrack. Later albums produced singles including "Lift Me Up", "Battle Born", "Wrong Side of Heaven", "Ain’t My Last Dance", "Inside Out", "A Little Bit Off", "IOU", "Welcome to the Circus", and "Times Like These".
Five Finger Death Punch toured extensively throughout their career, including appearances at major festivals such as the Mayhem Festival in 2008, 2010, and 2013, and the Download Festival in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2017. Early in their career, they supported acts such as Korn and Disturbed on major tours. They also performed for U.S. military personnel in Iraq in 2010. During a 2010 European tour, some members were briefly detained in Germany due to a misunderstanding involving alleged weapons violations, but were released without charges and continued their scheduled performances. The band has also appeared on television programs such as "Jimmy Kimmel Live!".
The band received multiple RadioContraband Rock Radio Awards, including "Indie Artist of the Year" from 2011 to 2014. They also received awards for "American Capitalist" as Album of the Year, "Coming Down" as Song of the Year in 2012, and "Wrong Side of Heaven" as Video of the Year in 2014. The song "Coming Down" also received recognition at the Independent Music Awards in 2013 in the metal and hardcore category. In 2025, the band was included by Jeff Mezydlo in a list of notable metal acts that formed in the 2000s.
Throughout their career, Five Finger Death Punch underwent several lineup and legal changes. In 2016, their record label Prospect Park filed a lawsuit alleging breach of contract after the band began working on new material and negotiations with another label. Around the same period, there were public statements and uncertainty regarding vocalist Ivan Moody’s status in the band, including a brief incident during a 2017 concert in the Netherlands where performances were disrupted and Moody later entered rehabilitation. Despite these issues, the band continued touring and recording, and Moody returned to performing later in 2017.
Guitarist Jason Hook left the band in 2020 following health-related absences, and Andy James became his permanent replacement. Jeremy Spencer had previously been replaced temporarily during touring due to surgery before his official departure. These changes left Bathory and Moody as the primary long-term members.
In later years, the band continued releasing music and touring. "AfterLife" was released in 2022, and additional singles followed. The band also announced plans for a 15th anniversary re-recording of "The Way of the Fist" and, in 2025, released a re-recorded greatest hits collection following disputes involving ownership and sale of their original master recordings. The band announced touring plans for 2026 and confirmed appearances at major festivals including Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida.
