The lineup has included vocalist and guitarist Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, guitarists Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett, keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and drummer Ilan Rubin. Grohl established Foo Fighters to release material he recorded after Nirvana disbanded in 1994, performing most of the instrumentation on the band’s self-titled debut album "Foo Fighters" (1995), which was recorded largely over six days. After attracting record label attention, he recruited Mendel and Goldsmith, formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, and Smear, who had toured with Nirvana. The band’s first public performance took place in February 1995, several months before the album’s release.
During the recording of the second album "The Colour and the Shape" (1997), Goldsmith departed and Grohl recorded most of the drum tracks; Smear left shortly afterward. They were replaced by Hawkins and Stahl, respectively. Stahl, previously a member of Scream alongside Grohl, was dismissed before the recording of the third album "There Is Nothing Left to Lose" (1999). The band briefly continued as a trio until Shiflett joined after the album’s completion. Subsequent releases included "One by One" (2002), the double album "In Your Honor" (2005), divided between acoustic and heavier material, and "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" (2007).
For the seventh studio album "Wasting Light" (2011), produced by Butch Vig, Smear returned as a full-time member after regularly appearing with the band since 2005. "Sonic Highways" (2014) was issued as a soundtrack to a television miniseries directed by Grohl. "Concrete and Gold" (2017) became the band’s second album to reach number one in the United States and the first to feature Jaffee, previously a touring and session keyboardist, as a full member. Their tenth album, "Medicine at Midnight" (2021), preceded the death of Hawkins in March 2022. Freese performed with the band from 2023 to 2025, followed by Rubin from 2025 onward. The eleventh album, "But Here We Are", was released in June 2023.
Foo Fighters have received 15 Grammy Awards, including five wins for Best Rock Album. In 2021, the band received the Global Icon Award at the MTV Video Music Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.
