Gel Set is the dark, minimal electropop solo project of multimedia artist Laura Callier, who is also a writer and videographer. Her other music projects include Simulation, a collaboration with Matchess' Whitney Johnson; Athleisure, which also features Tarnation's Jason Ogawa; and God Vol. 1, a duo with visual artist Nicole Ginelli. Callier grew up in Houston, where she watched music videos by Madonna, the Cars, and Weird Al, and taught herself to pick out the tunes to her favorite songs on a handheld keyboard. Eventually, she landed in Chicago; while getting her M.F.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Department of Sound, she became a vital part of the city's experimental electronic community. Taking inspiration from artists as disparate as Karen Dalton, Scott Walker, Tangerine Dream, and Erasure, Callier began issuing music as Gel Set in the early 2010s, including 2012's mini-album Cell Jets on Modern Tapes and a 2014 collaboration with Stacian on Moniker Records. The following year, Moniker released her first full-length, Human Salad, a more fleshed-out version of her stark but alluring sound. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue sound design, Callier further refined Gel Set's music on Body Copy, which arrived on 2MR in 2017.
