Gentleman Surfer (often abbreviated as GSURF) began as the solo project of drummer Jon Bafus in 2006. The first album, 2011's Bountiful Ore, was recorded by Andy Morin and features Jon on all instruments. Leading up to the release, Barry McDaniel (guitar) and Drew Walker (bass) were enlisted to perform the songs live. The project soon transformed into more of a group effort, with song writing contributions from all members. The trio then recorded BLALKS, and in late 2012, Zack Bissell was brought in on keyboards to help perform the songs live. The albums Gold Man and Reanimate Ore were released in 2015 and 2016.
Drew Walker departed in early 2017 and was replaced by Blake Arm (Wrungst, Buff Clout) prior to the recording of Hard Pass. Arm departed shortly afterwards and the band continued as a drums-guitar-keyboard trio. The 2019 EP Point Bags was originally recorded for the band's first tour of Japan, but was later made available online. Gentleman Surfer released Bacterium Tremendum in 2024, their first full-length in six years.
In late 2025, Barry McDaniel departed Gentleman Surfer after 14 years with the band and was replaced by Blake Arm, who returned after an eight-year absence. Arm's use of a hybrid bass guitar has allowed the band to further explore previously untapped sounds.
Gentleman Surfer have shared the stage with Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Cheer-Accident, Mike Watt, The Molecules, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Už Jsme Doma, The Nightingales, Tera Melos, and Green Milk from the Planet Orange, among many others.
Current lineup (2026):
Jon Bafus - drums, vocals
Zack Bissell - keyboards, vocals
Blake Arm - hybrid bass, vocals
