It’s easy to have a band motto; it’s far more difficult to continually pull it off. So, allow me to introduce the Bellingham, Washington three-piece, Girl Guts, a band that perfectly personifies the phrase, “hard, fast, dirty”. Finding themselves transplanted from two separate states in the upper Midwest to the foggy, sleepy college community of Bellingham, these three boys did what any overly-energetic Midwestern might: Find a cheap, shitty, low rent house on the outskirts of town, start throwing shows, and immediately start a grimy, heartfelt punk band. A little over a year and a half later and we have the first release from this collective, their demo, “Victoria”. Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Girl Guts at The Lil’ Wisconsin in Bellingham, “Victoria” is a twelve song CD of catchy basement sing-alongs. “Perspective” starts off as a statement, setting the tone for the other eleven songs. Big shouted chorus’s, lot’s of loud, quite, loud, and the resounding, “I don’t give a shit”, said with a sneer. It doesn’t stop, as Girl Guts continue to rage on, pushing through their brand of Midwest punk on “Part 2”, “3”, & “4”, showing their danceable, bouncy side while maintaining those huge, hooky chorus’s. “Matthew Takes A Walk” takes the band in a more serious direction, as they tackle religion offhandedly. But don’t take Girl Guts too seriously, they are, ultimately, just here to get the sweat going, get the bodies moving, and the mouths shouting, which they prove immediately with the next two tracks, “Gasoline & Alcohol”, and “Lie, Lie, Lie”. And once you get that party started, you gotta maintain, and “Victoria” doesn’t slow down, driving straight into the guitar heavy, “The Loss Of Feeling”, leading to “As Things Go…” a gruff, smoke and alcohol filled mid-tempo ripper. “Victoria” begins its descent with the ultra-catchy, and harmony filled, “The Honest Ones”, concluding with the quintessential Girl Guts punk rock basement anthem, “The Horses Got Out”. Drink too much, sing out loud, and be nice, party hard.
