Girls Doing Embroidery is actually just one girl (Olga Lukomsky), singing from the old world in a new world. Started on Good Friday of 2006, in New York City and continued today in Portland, Oregon. GDE holds true to a certain "outsider artist" amateur quality, while she sings lo-fi songs with her Balalaika (Russian Folk Instrument), or semi-tuned old guitar unapologetically. Girls Doing Embroidery is actually just one girl (Olga Lukomsky), singing from the old world in a new world. Started on Good Friday of 2006, in New York City and continued today in Portland, Oregon. GDE holds true to a certain "outsider artist" amateur quality, while she sings lo-fi songs with her Balalaika (Russian Folk Instrument), or semi-tuned old guitar unapologetically. The music comes from a quiet place, and encourages the listener to "BE BRAVE!" in self expression. Born in Tallin, Estonia and of Ukrainian decent, Olga sings something her DNA might've picked up in an old village, or a melody her grandmother hummed when they went mushroom picking in Kostople. Perhaps "Summer Feet" is an ancient song after all, sung by the Gypsy Children of Eastern Europe. Perhaps "The Singing None" was written by Olga before she even spoke English. It's hard to tell where these songs come from. The songs are purposely recorded unprofessionally, experimental to some degree, out of key layered vocals, out of rhythm field recordings, several languages at once, but unlike anything you've ever heard before. Olga writes, sings, plays all the music, and records everything herself. And she's doing it mostly for a handful of loved one... although everyone is welcome to listen.
