Godsmack is an American rock band from Lawrence, Massachusetts, formed in 1995. The band was founded by Sully Erna after his previous experience as a drummer, and early members included bassist Robbie Merrill, guitarist Lee Richards and drummer Tommy Stewart. After several early lineup changes, Tony Rombola joined on guitar in 1996, while Shannon Larkin later replaced Stewart on drums. As of the mid-2020s, the band has primarily consisted of Sully Erna and Robbie Merrill, with touring musicians filling additional roles following the departure of Rombola and Larkin in 2024. In 2025, it was reported that Rombola and Larkin left the band due to touring fatigue, and Will Hunt and Sam Koltun performed as live replacements during a 2025 European tour, after which the band entered a planned hiatus, though further recording activity remained possible.
The band initially performed under the name The Scam before changing to Godsmack after recording a demo. Their independently released debut album, "All Wound Up...", appeared in 1997 and gained regional attention in the Boston area, supported by radio play of songs such as "Keep Away" and "Whatever". Following increased local success, the material was reworked and released in 1998 as the self-titled album "Godsmack" under a major label. The album produced singles including "Whatever", "Keep Away", "Voodoo" and "Bad Religion", and achieved multi-platinum certification over time.
The band’s second album, "Awake", was released in 2000 and debuted high on the Billboard 200 chart. It included the instrumental track "Vampires", which received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. During this period, the band toured extensively, including international shows and festival appearances. Several tracks from the album, including "Sick of Life" and "Awake", were also used in United States Navy advertising campaigns.
In 2002, Erna wrote and performed "I Stand Alone" for the soundtrack of "The Scorpion King"; the song also appeared in the video game "Prince of Persia: Warrior Within". The band’s third studio album, "Faceless" (2003), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the single "Straight Out of Line", which received a Grammy nomination. In 2004, Godsmack released the acoustic EP "The Other Side", featuring reworked versions of earlier material and new acoustic tracks, and supported it with tours and live performances.
The fourth studio album, "IV", was released in 2006 and also reached number one in the United States. In 2007, the compilation album "Good Times, Bad Times... Ten Years of Godsmack" was released to mark the band’s first decade, including a cover of Led Zeppelin’s "Good Times Bad Times". In 2010, the band released "The Oracle", which also debuted at number one. A live release, "Live & Inspired", followed in 2012 and included both live recordings and cover songs.
The album "1000hp" was released in 2014, preceded by its title track and followed by singles such as "Something Different" and "What’s Next". In 2018, the band released "When Legends Rise", which included singles such as "Bulletproof", "When Legends Rise", "Under Your Scars" and later "Unforgettable". The latter was accompanied by a music video involving student musicians and achieved chart success. In 2023, Godsmack released "Lighting Up the Sky", which included the singles "Surrender", "You and I", "Soul on Fire" and "Truth". Following its release, Sully Erna suggested it could be the band’s final studio album, although later comments indicated that further work remained possible.
In 2025 and 2026, the band continued to tour intermittently, including festival appearances and participation in multi-band tours such as "The Rise Of Rock" alongside Stone Temple Pilots and Dorothy. A live album titled "Live At Mohegan Sun" was announced in March 2026, scheduled for release in May of that year.
