"Camden Town, late nineties, the rock radar is trained elsewhere and the britpop hangover is clinging on to the Sunday Night of the Soul. Somewhere just off the beaten path before the crack dens of Agar Grove is Rosie O'Grady's, Come Down and Meet the The Folks, and a regular group of boozing bumpkins, obsessed with Country, Gram Parson and bowing to the talents of Big Steve Pulford (Arlenes) and Alan Tyler (The Rockingbirds). Then one Sunday afternoon, the saloon doors swung open and in shambled the bloodied back bone of Richie BoBos Knewbloods, pumped up like a couple of pirates on extended on shore leave they prowled the back room of Rosies scanning for talent...
Some time later Mike Hughes (bass) & Matt Saunders (Drums) along with Tom Bowen (Guitars) and Robin Brookes (Vocals) formed the initial line up of Goldwing beginning with regular rehearsals at – contender then for Camden's grottiest Studio – Playground. They quickly threw together a blistering playlist of shimmering new country inspired pop rock... and the EP "Goldwing One"produced by Boz Boorer soon followed.
The band built a local reputation for good music, heavy drinking and bickering. Unfortunately it was the bickering that was to be their undoing – as you'll see later.
A year into the adventure they were joined by Camden born Darren Churchill on keys who added another dimension to the sound - and the arguments. Meanwhile Goldwing became unofficial residents at Kentish Town's hipster drop in centre, The Verge, managed by the always welcoming and generous Peter Beck.
A second Boz Boorer produced EP soon followed: The bigger and beefier ''Wing It!'. More gigs and a manager in the form of Ali Rawling. Later a third pared down recording session was convened, this time a straight one-take live recording undertaken at Ferguson Hill Studios in Camden and produced by Tim Hill. This session captures the band a their ripping best.
Goldwing played their biggest gig on a boat on the Thames, on Jubilee weekend 2002 – celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Sex Pistols similar escapade. The gig was notable for many things, including Boz Boorer joining them on stage playing Sax. The band played a hot set and the boat rocked. Had it crossed the minds of the Police to take a interest in the proceedings, this gig could have been better known for it's narcotic haul. But the fuzz had other things to worry about that night. The gig started proper in front of the Dome (now the O2 Arena) and finished in front of the Houses of Parliament with the Queen's Jubilee fireworks for a backdrop and a 20 minute jam of the track Fever. The gig was a triumph but it pretty much marked the end of the band.
Not long after the band split – due to a dispute between Tom and Robin.
Tom Bowen went on to Join The Redlands Palomino Co. Mike Hughes, Matt Sunders and Darren Churchill went on to form StellarSoul with Calvin Morris.
This is the the only record of the Goldwing anywhere online. The songs here are a collection of the 3 EPs that Goldwing recorded. Compiled by distant collaborator and avid supporter Dave Constant, the album name comes from the Gerry Ranson interview in Bucketfull of Brains Magazine, where Robin and Tom again started bickering, which Gerry kindly described as "The Charming Internal Tension of Goldwing...", hence the name of the collection.
