Grace Potter & the Nocturnals was an American rock band from Vermont led by Grace Potter. The band split in 2015.
Formed in 2002 in Waitsfield by drummer Matt Burr, guitarist Scott Tournet, and singer Grace Potter, they began their career as an indie band, self-producing their albums and touring extensively in the jam bands and music festivals circuit, playing as many as 200 gigs in a year. In 2005 they signed for Hollywood Records and have subsequently released albums encompassing rock sub-genres such as blues rock, folk rock, hard rock, and alternative rock. Their third, self-titled album (released in 2010) was a major commercial success, topping the iTunes charts and receiving international attention.
Grace Potter, whose dynamic vocal ability has drawn comparisons to legends Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin and more recently Sheryl Crow and Joan Osborne, gained recognition for Hammond B-3 and piano.
The original lineup included Scott Tournet (guitar/slide guitar), Matthew Burr (drums/percussion), and Bryan Dondero (upright/electric bass). After Dondero parted ways with the Nocturnals in March 2009, they brought in Catherine Popper (bass) and also added Benny Yurco (rhythm guitar).
They toured with national acts such as Taj Mahal, Trey Anastasio, Dave Matthews Band, The Black Crowes, Derek Trucks, Gov't Mule and Robert Cray.
The band independently recorded and released "Nothing but the Water" in 2005. The group released its second album, This Is Somewhere, on August 7, 2007, on Hollywood Records.
The group released their third studio recording, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, in June 2010. On the album, Catherine Popper replaced Libramento on bass.
The group released "The Lion the Beast the Beat" in 2012.
After Potter's divorce from Burr, the band disbanded.
