Gunfighter found its beginnings as a side project of Kansas City-based Molly McGuire in the spring of 1998. Formed in 1991 by singer/songwriter Jason Blackmore, Molly McGuire's history includes a first 7" on Caulfield Records followed by a handful of singles on Chicago-based Hit It! Records.
After extensive touring throughout the country with acts like The Jesus Lizard, Tool, and Girls Against Boys, Molly McGuire was becoming quite the sought after act. It was at this point that Hit It! decided to put out the full length LP, "Sisters Of...", which received immediate attention.
Shortly thereafter Molly McGuire went in the studio to record "Lime", produced by ex-Failure member Ken Andrews. The band was soon signed to Epic records, which opened the band to some opportunities. Touring the The Melvins, The Jim Rose Side Show, and sharing the second stage of the last Lollapolooza tour with the likes of Failure and Skeleton Key.
And then there was Gunfighter...
Gunfighter was started as a side project, but seemed like a breath of fresh air for the Molly boys. Jason Blackmore found Gunfighter to be a vent to new ideas that didn't quite fit the Molly mold. With this new found creative outlet the band went to Train Wreck Studios to record the new material.
Shortly thereafter they went to Red House Recording studios to record some old and new Molly songs. When all of this was completed it was decided at this point they would push forward as Gunfighter. Compiling songs from the early Gunfighter recordings as well as the Molly recordings they compiled the full length that is currently known as "Pro-Electric." This full length was scheduled for release on the now defunct label Loosegroove Records and was later released by the band on their own label High Noon Records.
The brand new full length CD, High Noon, produced by Ed Rose and Jason Blackmore is now available on Idol Records. It combines twelve tunes from the Trainwreck and Red House recording sessions.
And today...
The band has recently relocated to sunny San Diego, California, and is currently assembling it's new lineup featuring singer/songwriter Jason Blackmore on guitar and vocals, former STICK and MEANS TO AN END guitar god Mike Tobin on lead guitar and Rob "the pulverizer" Smith of TRAINDODGE fame on drums.
The band will at the West coast club scene this fall and are discussing plans for a midwest tour. Look for a new GUNFIGHTER/TRAINDODGE split seven inch in the late fall 2001.
