The songs at first bordered on irreverent and almost distasteful, modeled after the band name of course, but in time the themes turned serious. There is still a large degree of whimsy and melancholy to every song. Their debut EP, Pink Pillows, released in September 2008, consists of a collection of the earlier, less serious pieces.
When Joe Ricken and Cory Davis Vance joined for the rhythm section, the songs came to life and were ready for public view. Half Shark Half Jesus plays mostly in the Eugene area but also ventures north to Portland occasionally.
