Happy Bastards first surfaced in 2004 as one of the newer American punk rock bands on the legendary Profane Existence roster. The Eugene, Oregon duo consists of Christy on guitar and lead vocals, and Sean on drums and vocals. Unlike many of its influences and peers, Happy Bastards is almost entirely devoid of crust and metal influences and rarely mentions politics in their lyrics, instead eschewing this for an old-school, '80s hardcore-influenced sound more comparable to the Devotchkas and early Sleater-Kinney with lyrics that focus more on classic punk rock themes like boredom, alienation, anger and independence. Happy Bastards released its first LP, Box of Hard Knocks, in 2005 on PE.
