IMPORTANT OLCC INFO!. Support the OLCC’s plans to allow music venues to admit people under 21 by writing an email before Friday, March 7, 2008.. Visit PDX POP NOW! and find everything you need to support this issue and make a difference.
pc-pdx's summary:
Remember the OLCC letter witting campaign from last fall and the possibility of opening up some of the venues to be able to serve the All Ages music community?. Well it failed with a vote of 3-2 against accepting the amendments that would allow for such a change.

Hello friends,As you may know, White Fang is planning to tour the U.S. next month.. We were relying on the sale of Kyle’s car, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, in order to purchase a van.Unfortunately, today we were leaving a jam session and the worst thing that could ever happen, did indeed happen.Kyle, thinking that his car was in reverse, pushed on the gas sending the front of the car straight into the truck parked in front of us.. The truck is fine, but Kyle’s car is now, basically, totaled. The hood is smashed and the radiator is busted.. So is the left headlight. Now, not only do we not have a way to get a van, but we are not going to have almost any money for tour.

The two local bands in this line-up were amazing, but since I am probably going to blog about them again in the future, I am going to stick to the touring band, The Usaisamonster.. Not at all the metal-centric dirge fest that I was expecting (especially on this bill- no offense, JXATG and TBTSYW). The Usaisamonster has a much more psychedelic feel- quiet, almost pop-y vocal harmonies in the darker sounding minor keys and synth/keyboard parts that weave into with the rest of the arrangement to make it sound real dream-y.. Really good, really different than what I had expected, which almost always is nice.

Their show is full of crazy energy-- King Khan uses his own kind charm to rile up the crowd-- on stage at Dantes he reached into his panties and grabbed a handfull of what looked like cauliflower, throwing it into the audience-- awesome!. King Khan's charismatic stage presence combined with their jangling rock and roll guitars and screaming vocals turned the crowd into a sweaty pit of screaming ladies in no time flat.

The shows will stop at the 3535, but the house may again see old tennants as John Brainard is back in town to possibly open up a coffee shop or hostel... They are also, on occasion, the source of some WTF?! confusion:"Why is my show tagged 'dubstep'?. I'm not dubtep or reggae!""The listing for my band shows the wrong bio - what's up?"Let it be known that we don't actually host any of the band bios or tags at this moment in time.. Most of the bands listed correctly will have Bios attached to them but there are a number of bands out there that don't yet have these posted.. If you're looking to get a bio posted for your band, there's a trick to it:All of the Bios come from Last.Fm.The way last.fm works is through a thing called "scrobbling".Scrobbling works by installing a program on your computer that catalogs and tracks what you listen to - all this info goes back to the Last.fm database.. It's really neat and gives you fun facts and stats on your listening habbits. The way a band begins to exist in the system is by somebody listening to it.As far as i know, there's no way to manually enter in a new band to the system : it HAS to be be scrobbled meaning you have to listen to it.Even if your band doesn't have any music recorded, Don't worry - it's not a problem, just get clever:Just throw on an ABBA tune (you know you have it) after renaming the band "ABBA" to whatever your band name is ("Tijuana Poop Smugglers" ?).Listen to the song and make sure it's 'scrobbled'.This will get the band name into the system. - note that it won't show up immediately, it may take a few hours or more.. You will then be able to add and edit the Bio and it will show up on pc-pdx anytime anybody hovers on it or checks out your band page.

Yep, it's true! All 19,637 flyers went kaputznik and made a super bye-bye action with no recycle bin love of any kind.I am uber careful and paranoid of these things and still manage to pull an epic maneuver like this about once a year. -Last year whilst working on a client site, i deleted the entire four-year calendar set for *two* site for the Solano County Library.. YEAH BUDDY.Yep, So - where we're at now is that i quickly dropped $43 to get some magic (Slingblade)"Should'nta done that boy" software so as i can try to get back the deleted info off the hard drive. -IT was a half win.. I think we got back most of the files but there seems to be an issue where the files that came back did so with different data or whatever : The file names no longer match the actual show info they should contain so SHIT IS BANANANANAS all over the site right now.I have since found a version of the flyers folder in our old svn repo from about 6-weeks ago when we made some reconfiguration changes.. I, in all my awesomeness, didn't get these two flyer related folders back into svn sync (because we're virtualizing the directories to share the data with other sites, NERD stuff..) and totally blew the gun in the face. It's okay though.

The Show-Guide at this point, as we've been told by many (thanks!), is the tip top kaleidoscope of cool as far as any diy show listing site goes.. It is an open-to-anybody wiki where you can post and edit any show to keep everybody up to date on the cool shit that happens here in pdx.. Back in 2007 there was not any central place to find and talk about shows or to keep everybody updated on last minute changes : just bands with myspace pages furiously sending out bulletins at 5pm saying that the 8'oclock show had to move houses across town or whatever and that just want awesome. We created the show-guide wiki, as it stands now, over the last five years.. I got nostalgic a few days back and decided to hit Archive.org to go through some of their screenshots of the various site styles through the years.

So…there are many music “festivals” and whatnot during Memorial Day weekend (and a boat-load of bands that hit the road in relation to said festivals/with the on-set of spring). as result, we have cleverly/effectively ridden on the coat-tails of these festivals/tours and are proud to present the most awesome 7 consecutive-days of music (without resorting to festival “test of endurance”/”epic” line-ups…i.e. 10+ bands on a single-day), which we have deemed:The Know’s MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough) SHOW SERIESalso, of important note (READ): several of the shows listed will require us to monitor the capacity of our venue/bar area (for everyone’s sake), and we’ll be using the same style of “restricted-entry” that was employed over our 7th Anniversary-Week for the Tragedy/From Ashes Rise/Bi-Marks show. if you are not familiar with how this worked, the amendments to our standard cover/entry to our shows are listed below:- remove our cover-charge “cap” (of $5) in favor of an appropriate alternative…somewhere in the range of $7-10- we close our bar at 7pm and clear out extraneous furniture and what-have-you to create more standing-room/viewing ability for the presumably larger crowd.- we re-open at 8pm and charge entry/stamp hands at our front entrance (instead of the curtained entrance to the venue area…our venue is adjacent to our bar-room/separated by a wall and curtain. the curtain remains open during these shows). the stamps allow for attendees come-and-go out of our space for a smoke/phone call/etc and then be re-admitted to the show.- our front door-person will be running a ‘counter’ and will restrict entry once our capacity is reached. at this point we’ll revert to a one-in/one-out system that is up to the discretion of our front door staff.- we often do not allow drinks at our side-walk tables during “special scenarios,” as we must keep the sidewalk passable for pedestrian traffic/only have the space to allow the anticipated number of smokers at our tables without causing disruption for passer-by. this is also up to the discretion of our front door staff (who are unbelievably amiable/looking out for the best interest of the show…so please work with them).- we’ll run a video-feed of the performances to our barroom tv’s so that people can still see the show in the event that they want leave the venue area (ex – they’re tired from standing/feeling too cramped/need another drink/etc)long and short is…during “special scenarios” we try to maximize the level of comfort and stage visibility for the show-goers/provide greater compensation to the performer(s) while also being particularly sensitive/not causing disruption to our neighborhood. our barroom and venue area will be utilized as ”one room” for the duration of the show (versus being separate entities). i.e. regular patrons/curious passerby/etc are not admitted to any part of our establishment during the show run-time without paying the cover…this allows for the greatest number of people who actually want to see the show/are invested in the bands/music to attend!
