How Strange It Is has always been a product of dynamic collaborations, but their most recent release In the Light of the Blistering Moon displays songwriter Jordan Krinsky’s deepening musical relationship with his bandmates and the thrilling results of their sonic explorations. Backed by Annie Miranda (Soft Cheese, Moon Shy) on bass, Annie Fifer (Yellow Room, Babytooth) on guitar, Kyle Gordon on drums and a variety of others when they’re available, the record is highly collaborative and finds Krinsky’s precise, introspective writing intersecting with improvisations and experiments. The band organizes this collaborative chaos into tight, structured songs indebted to early-aughts classic synth-heavy indie rock along with 2010s bedroom pop and contemporary slowcore.
