Janie was the younger sister of Jeanne Black who scored a major hit with "He'll Have to Go" in 1960. The sisters had been signed jointly to Capitol Records in 1959 and performed together on the B-side of "He'll Have to Stay" as Jeanne & Janie.

Matters weren't helped by the fact that Jeanne often sang on the B-sides of her sister's solo records or that Capitol sometimes released Jeanne & Janie duets.
A tune by Billy Page, who later penned "The In Crowd", "Lonely Sixteen" avoids the stock chord progression of early 60s pop while Black delivers the daringly prosaic lyrics very assuredly for one so young.
