John Phelan grew up in Nashville, Tn where he met his good friend Matt Spurlock. Matt was the son of Tommy Spurlock, renowned steel guitar player/session man, who had a huge influence on his son's musical taste which in turn influenced John's. Growing up around the "train", an old box car turned recording studio at Cummings Station, John began listening to the Stanley Bros, Merle Haggard, The Band, Leon Russell, to name a few. Later, such artists as Son Volt, Cory Branan and Lucero would leave their mark on him.

Growing up around the "train", an old box car turned recording studio at Cummings Station, John began listening to the Stanley Bros, Merle Haggard, The Band, Leon Russell, to name a few. Later, such artists as Son Volt, Cory Branan and Lucero would leave their mark on him. After higschool, John formed The Brakemen and played regionally throughout the Southern US until the band dissolved in 2004 and John moved to Portland, OR. John is now currently working on his self titled debut album.
