Journey achieved their greatest commercial success between 1978 and 1987 with Steve Perry as lead vocalist. During this period, they released a series of hit songs including "Don't Stop Believin'" (1981), which in 2009 became the top-selling track in iTunes history among songs not released in the 21st century. Their seventh studio album, "Escape," reached number one on the Billboard 200 and included the single "Open Arms." The 1983 follow-up album, "Frontiers," reached number two in the United States and number six on the UK Albums Chart, producing multiple successful singles. The band reunited in the mid-1990s and has since regrouped twice, with Steve Augeri from 1998 to 2006 and Arnel Pineda from 2007 onward.
Journey has released 25 gold and platinum albums, including the 18-time platinum RIAA Diamond Certified 1988 album "Greatest Hits." They have had 19 top-40 singles in the US, six of which reached the top 10, and "Don't Stop Believin'" reached number six on the UK Singles Chart. In 2005, the song reached number three in iTunes downloads. Originally a progressive rock band, Journey redefined their sound by incorporating pop arrangements on their fourth album, "Infinity," and became recognized as a prominent commercial rock and pop band.
The Recording Industry Association of America reports that Journey has sold over 52 million albums in the United States, making them the 11th-best-selling band in the country, with over 100 million records sold worldwide. Their songs are widely played on rock radio and have become staples of arena rock. Journey ranks number 96 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, with inductees including Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Aynsley Dunbar, and Steve Smith.
