Justin Smith, also known as J Smitty, started his music career at a young age. Born in Lexington, South Carolina, he had a variety of different musical influences. Always listening to his grandfather playing the guitar and singing a lot of old folk songs he began to love music. Smith's grandfather bought him his first guitar at the age of 14 so that he would be able to play at his 8th grade talent show.. He taught himself how to play and practiced on a regular basis. Growing up in South Carolina where there is'nt many successful musical artists he had doubt in ever making a career out of music, but continued making music and writing songs for himself about his personal life experience. Throughout high school he was in a few bands but realized that he was really influenced by the hip-hop sound and wanted to create his own type of sound.
Since he loved playing the guitar and the acoustic sound, he decided to put the two together. He released his 1st album in 2002, "Acoustic Life." After deciding not to continue with performing in bands, Smith started up his own hip-hop and R&B productions company (Jus Productions). While in college he started working at SeaNote Recording in Myrtle Beach, SC. Here he learned how to become a recording engineer, which is something that he always wanted to be. He made a little money by selling his original beats to clients that would come in the studio, but he wanted more. He really enjoyed the production side to music. He liked to be behind the boards tracking and mixing beats. He likes to turn lyrics into a full song, to give people something to listen to and feel. He says that he only writes songs about his personal life, and not for the commercial market. Even though this may be true, his lyrics seem to relate to many different people. He has a wide variety of musical sounds from hip-hop to country and many more. Smith has received respect from all local artist and has sold CD's from New York all the way to Florida (the entire east coast).
