Karnivool is an Australian rock band formed in Perth in 1998. Since 2004, the line-up has consisted of Ian Kenny (vocals), Drew Goddard (guitar), Mark Hosking (guitar), Jon Stockman (bass), and Steve Judd (drums). The band has released four studio albums: "Themata" (2005), "Sound Awake" (2009), "Asymmetry" (2013), and "In Verses" (2026).
Karnivool developed from a high school band formed in 1997 in Perth, Western Australia. The group initially performed cover versions of songs by Nirvana and Carcass, alongside original material. In 1998, Ian Kenny shifted the focus to entirely original compositions, replaced the existing members, and adopted the name Karnivool, reportedly derived from a description of the earlier line-up.
Between 1998 and 2004, the band underwent several line-up changes. Early members included Andrew Goddard, Andrew Brown, and Brett McKenzie. Brown was replaced by Jon Stockman in 2000, while Ray Hawking later replaced McKenzie on drums. Mark Hosking joined in 2003, and Steve Judd replaced Hawking in 2004, establishing the band’s long-standing line-up.
In 1999, Karnivool released its debut EP "Karnivool", featuring four tracks. It was followed by the EP "Persona" in 2001, which included new material and a re-recorded track from the debut. After "Persona", the band won the Western Australian State Final of the National Campus Band Competition and performed at the national finals. They also supported acts including Rollins Band (a performance later cancelled) and Fear Factory.
The band’s debut album, "Themata", was released independently in 2005 and produced by Forrester Savell. The album was primarily written by Drew Goddard, who also performed multiple instrumental roles during recording. It was later released internationally following a licensing agreement. Around this period, Karnivool toured domestically and internationally, and contributed a cover of "The Only Way" by Gotye to the compilation album "Mixed Blood". Goddard and Stockman also contributed to "Hold Your Colour" by Pendulum.
Following extensive touring, Karnivool recorded their second album, "Sound Awake", released in 2009. The album marked a more collaborative writing process and was recorded across multiple locations. It achieved commercial success in Australia, debuting at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart and reaching number one on the AIR Chart. Singles from the album included "Set Fire to the Hive" and "All I Know". The band toured extensively in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Europe, and also performed in India for the first time, drawing a large audience.
After touring cycles for "Sound Awake", the band began work on their third album. New material was introduced during live performances from 2011 onwards. The album "Asymmetry" was released in 2013 and debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart. It was produced by Nick Didia and included singles such as "We Are" and "The Refusal". The album received an ARIA Award, marking the band’s first win. Karnivool subsequently toured Australia, the United Kingdom, and Europe, including anniversary shows for "Themata".
In 2019, Karnivool confirmed work on a fourth studio album. Plans for anniversary touring in 2020 were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to postponements and cancellations, with some performances livestreamed. In 2021, the band released the single "All It Takes", their first new studio material since 2013.
Karnivool continued performing live and headlined festivals in Australia alongside bands such as Cog. In 2025, they released the standalone single "Drone", followed by the announcement of their fourth album "In Verses". The album was released in 2026, preceded by the single "Opal".
