Ken Stringfellow (born 30 October 1968 in Los Angeles, CA, United States) is an American musician, songwriter, singer and record producer, most widely known as Jon Auer's partner in the Seattle-based power pop group, The Posies (1986-2021). He is also an artist and producer in his own right. In addition to his solo work and The Posies, Stringfellow has produced albums for many artists around the world and had long stints in R.E.M. (a full decade) and Big Star (17 years!), both in the studio and on the road.
Ken's solo career alongside his work with The Posies began with the 1997 release, This Sounds Like Goodbye. The low-fi, experimental feel of this album was a departure from the richness of The Posies sound.
His second solo release, Touched, had the misfortune of an 11 September 2001 street date and, as a result, went unnoticed by many. The outright experimentalism of his solo début was replaced by a more polished and rounded sound, more reminiscent of his work in The Posies. Stringfellow's third solo effort, Soft Commands, was released to critical acclaim in 2004.
Stringfellow's long overdue fourth studio album, Danzig in the Moonlight, came out in 2012. In spite of the city name in its title, the record was recorded with a cast of mostly Dutch players. A live companion, recorded at Amsterdam's legendary Paradiso club, was also released: Paradiso in the Moonlight (Live) (2014), featuring largely the same roster of Dutch musicians as on the studio album.
June 2014 saw the release of I Never Said I'd Make It Easy, Stringfellow's fifth studio effort as a solo artist. After that... life got in the way. On top of that, in October 2021, allegations of sexual misconduct by Stringfellow surfaced in a 25 October 2021 article published by KUOW, Seattle's NPR affiliate. Jon Auer told Stringfellow that he will not work with him anymore, effectively splitting up The Posies.
October 2024 saw the release of Circuit Breaker, Ken Stringfellow's sixth solo studio album, the first in over a decade.
