1. Kent (written as kent) was a Swedish rock band formed on May 16, 1990, in Eskilstuna under the original name Coca-Cola Kids, followed by Jones & Giftet and later Havsänglar. Kent is often referred to as "Sweden's biggest rock band".
The founding members were Joakim Berg (vocals/guitar), Martin Sköld (bass), Markus Mustonen (drums/backing vocals), Sami Sirviö (lead guitar), and Thomas Bergqvist (keyboards). After Bergqvist’s departure in 1992, Martin Roos joined, but by 1993, they had moved to Stockholm and adopted the name Kent (an old-fashioned name in Sweden) to reflect a feeling of being outsiders.
The band's self-titled debut in 1995 established their alternative rock style. Shortly after, Harri Mänty replaced Roos on guitar, completing their recognized lineup. Verkligen (1996) reached the top of the Swedish charts, featuring the hit “Kräm (så nära får ingen gå)”. With Isola (1997) and its popular track "747," Kent attempted to break into international markets with English versions of Isola and Hagnesta Hill (1999), accompanied by a U.S. tour. Despite limited success abroad, they remained a Scandinavian favorite.
In 2000, Kent released B-Sidor 95-00, a collection of B-sides, followed by the chart-topping Vapen & Ammunition (2002), which included the band's first number-one single, “Dom andra.” Their 2003 Stockholm Stadium show, known as "The White Concert," attracted over 30,000 fans. In 2005, Kent released Du & jag döden, returning to the top of the Swedish charts. This album produced two chart-topping singles, “Max 500” and “Palace & Main.” That same year, Kent released The Hjärta & Smärta EP, containing five tracks including the widely acclaimed “Dom som försvann”. In 2006, they released “Nålens öga”.
In January 2007, Kent announced that guitarist Harri Mänty had departed at the end of 2006, just before recording began for their next album. That album, Tillbaka till samtiden, was later released on October 27, 2007. Marking a shift from alternative rock to a more electronic sound, this album layered synth elements prominently over the guitars, influencing Kent’s future works.
Kent signed with Universal Music in June 2011 and released their more piano-based album Jag är inte rädd för mörkret (2012), recorded in France. In 2014, they released Tigerdrottningen and held their own music festival, Kentfest.
On March 14, 2016, Kent declared that they would disband following a final Scandinavian tour, a new album release, and a compilation of their greatest hits, bringing their 26-year career to a close. Their farewell tour concluded on December 17, 2016, with a final concert at Stockholm's Tele2 Arena. Leading up to the release of their last album, Då som nu för alltid , Kent issued two final singles, “Egoist” on March 14, 2016, and “Vi är inte längre där” on May 4, 2016, officially concluding their legacy as one of Sweden’s most enduring and beloved rock bands.
In April 2024, Berg was a guest on the podcast, Back to the music with Ingrid. Among other things, he was asked if Kent will ever release a new album or play live again and he replied: "It would have been great fun to do that but... No, we haven't talked about that. Or, we've talked about it. But it would be more of a live thing maybe." On 18 October 2024, Kent announced that they will play three concerts in Stockholm in March 2025. On 15 March 2025, it will be the 30th anniversary of their eponymous debut album Kent and the 20th anniversary of their album Du & jag döden.
