Killer Canary is a band whose origins are complicated and rambling. In the fall of 2001, guitarist Rob Landis and drummer Zak Andree, both originally from Boston, were attending college in California. Killer Canary is a band whose origins are complicated and rambling. In the fall of 2001, guitarist Rob Landis and drummer Zak Andree, both originally from Boston, were attending college in California. They met when Zak responded to a flyer Rob had posted seeking a drummer and bassist, and they bonded over a mutual enjoyment of playing Pixies and Nirvana songs. They formed a band called The Panics, and over the next few years they released an EP and played several shows in the Los Angeles area.
By 2005, both had relocated back to Boston and set out to form a new band. Steve Sarro replied to an ad they posted on the internet seeking a bassist, and Killer Canary was officially born that spring. After spending much of the summer and fall gigging around the Boston area as a three-piece, they decided their sound would benefit from the addition of a rhythm guitarist. Enter Anthony Mantia, who had posted an internet ad seeking a band and who serendipitously happened to be living with the son of Steve's godfather in East Boston.
The band played and recorded music in the Boston area for another two years until Anthony left for law school in Connecticut and Zak decided to move to the far side of the country in the fall of 2007, effectively ending the band. A year later, Zak finally found new musicians to play with who share his love of manic rock music. He was joined on bass by his college friend and current roommate AC Scott, and on guitar by Erik Hajnal and Mike Cook. Complete once again, Killer Canary is now playing in and around the Seattle area.
