Kilo Kish is an alternative R&B singer, songwriter, and occasional rapper who has recorded with the Jet Age of Tomorrow, the Internet, Vince Staples, Gorillaz, Childish Gambino, and Chet Faker, among others. She has also released her own material.
Born Lakisha Robinson in Orlando, Florida, she spent part of her childhood in New Jersey prior to returning to Orlando and was briefly in a pop group called D'Angelz. She moved to New York, attended the Pratt Institute, and worked as a model and waiter.
Led by the dreamy "Navy," her first EP, Homeschool, was self-released in April 2012. A couple years later, after assorted collaborative work, she connected with the music wing of French fashion label Kitsuné for Across, another EP of atmospheric, slackened R&B. In 2015, she appeared on Etienne de Crécy's Super Discount 3 and Vince Staples' Summertime '06. Reflections in Real Time, a sprawling and deeply personal album that flitted between fully developed songs and fragmentary interludes, followed in February 2016.
In 2018, the EP “Mothe” marked a shift towards an electronic and industrial sound, symbolizing transformation with heavy beats, aggressive synths and distorted vocals. The central theme was: evolution, gender performance and autonomy. It was a break from the previous softness, demonstrating artistic versatility.
In 2019, “Redux” deepened this electronic aesthetic, with refined production, poetic and enigmatic lyrics, and more confident vocals. It reinforced her identity as a conceptual artist, far from commercial trends.
In the 2022 “American Gurl”, marked as Kilo´s most pop and visually striking album, serving as a creative climax that had been in the works since the 2018 EP "Mothe" explores hyperfemininity, national identity and consumer culture. The album featured collaborations with artists such as Miguel, Vince Staples and Jean Dawson. The sound fused industrial pop, dance and synthpunk, creating a chaotic and stylized video game universe, combined with a glam-futuristic aesthetic, consolidating Kish as a reference in alternative pop with social criticism.
Her most recent EP Negotiations marks yet another evolution in Kish’s sound and conceptual concerns. Described by the artist herself as a “meditation on how to be productive in a system that exploits your mind and emotions as resources,” the project delves into the contradictions of emotional and digital capitalism. Over the course of five tracks, Kish alternates between moments of speech, singing, and digital distortions to express the tension between identity and performance, especially in the professional and creative world.
